Taking CLEP exams while homeschooling high school has many benefits for the homeschool student. Some colleges will accept the CLEP and some will not. Some will take them in varying degrees. There are usually benefits with any of them. One thing to try to remember is to pick your colleges wisely. As an example, Seattle Pacific University will take a full year of college by CLEP. Every time we passed a CLEP it represented many thousands of dollars to us. Not only that, even when we didn't end up using those CLEPs, they still earned us amazing scholarships.
In the beginning we were taking CLEP exams so they would not have to find the money for four full years of college. But in the end it freed us up to be able to get that excellent scholarship. My boys did end up going to college for four years. They just enjoyed it more because they were able to be placed into classes even when they wouldn't necessarily be given college credit for passing a CLEP in that subject.
The confusing thing concerning CLEP is that there is not a national policy. Each college has its own policy on if they allow CLEP or not, what scores they agree to, and how they use them if they DO allow them. That can make it quite hard to write about. In other words, one college will give you college credit AND give you advance placement. Another college may not use the scores at all, and may still require an AP in the exact same subject area.
If you are contemplating CLEP, AP or SAT 2 for college transcripts testing you will want to be certain that that your student is going to pass the test before you step foot in the door. You will want to give them a sample test, whether a standard sample test, like a general CLEP exam or a specific subject test like in Chemistry. Give it to them while they are at home and where they are comfortable. Make certain everything is going well so that you can make sure that they are going to pass it before you take it for real.
